Methodology

Culture

Includes gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic culture.

Identification and susceptibility will be performed, if appropriate, at an additional charge.

Specimen Requirements

Submit Culturette Plus with 2 swabs.

 

Specimen source is required.

 

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Specimen Type: Aspirate or tissue

Container/Tube: Screw-capped, sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Prepare site, wash wound margins well with antiseptic.
2. Collect specimen by curettage of biopsy of wall of wound. (Swabs are less worthy for examination of these wounds.)
3. Place specimen in container. If there is a delay in transport, place specimen in transport media.
4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and source of specimen.
5. Place container in a biohazard bag and seal.

 
Specimen Type: Swab

Container/Tube: Sterile culture swab

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Prepare site, wash wound margins well with antiseptic.
2. Remove cap with swab attached.
3. Obtain swab specimen from deep wound and/or drainage.
4. Return swab to transport tube.
5. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and source of specimen.
6. Place tube in a biohazard bag and seal.
