Culture

Includes Campylobacter antigen, Escherichia coli O157, Salmonella, Shigella, shiga toxin 1&2, and Yersinia upon request.

Identification and susceptibility will be performed, if appropriate, at an additional charge.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Stool

Container/Tube: Clean, dry container with a tightly-fitting lid

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Specimen Minimum Volume: 5 mL

Collection Instructions:
1. Place fresh, random stool in container.

2. No preservative.

3. Two to 3 specimens should be collected at different times.

4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last) and date and actual time of collection.

Additional Information:

1. A rectal swab is the least acceptable specimen.

Negative for enteric pathogens Campylobacter antigen, Escherichia coli O157, Salmonella, Shigella, shiga toxin 1&2, and Yersinia (if requested)

Critical value (automatic call-back): positive for Shiga toxin 1&2 only.
