Methodology
Culture
Identification and susceptibility will be performed, if appropriate, at an additional charge.
Specimen Requirements
Call Chilton Hospital Microbiology Laboratory at 973-831-5000, ext. 5670 to obtain correct swab.
Only a physician may obtain these specimens.
If a smear is needed, order GC SMEAR Gonococcal (GC) Smear.
Specimen source is required.
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Specimen Type: Vaginal
Container/Tube: Sterile culture swab
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen
Collection Instructions:
1. Remove excess mucus from cervical os and
surrounding mucosa using 1 swab, and discard swab.
2. Insert second swab into endocervical canal.
3. Rotate swab for 10 to 30 seconds in endocervical canal to ensure adequate sampling.
4. Withdraw swab carefully; avoid any contact with vaginal mucosa.
5. Return swab to transport tube, pushing swab into transport fluid.
6. Label tube with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
7. Place tube in a biohazard bag and seal.
Specimen Type: Urethral
Container/Tube: Sterile culture swab
Specimen Volume: Entire specimen
Collection Instructions:
1. Patient should not have urinated for at least 1 hour prior to
specimen collection.
2. Insert swab 2 to 4 cm into urethra using a
rotating motion to facilitate insertion.
3. Once inserted, rotate swab gently using sufficient pressure to
ensure swab comes into contact with all urethral surfaces. Allow
swab to remain inserted for 2 to 3 seconds.
4. Withdraw swab.
5. Return swab to transport tube, pushing swab into transport fluid.
6. Label swab with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
7. Place tube in a biohazard bag and seal.
